We have curated a list of WordPress wiki plugins here. All the plugins have different, unique, and premium features.
We all know Wikipedia, but is it the only wiki website or wiki system out there? – No. There are plenty more, so what does wiki mean?
Wiki is a website or software (server program) that operates on wiki system. The wiki system allows users to collaboratively add, edit or modify the content and structure using the browser. The term wiki came from the Hawaiian language word, “wiki wiki” which means “fast”.
The wiki websites run on wiki engine which acts as a content management system. Unlike other popular CMS like WordPress and Joomla, Wiki websites are different as they are mostly open source, allow multiple user accesses and have a simpler interface.
Not all wiki websites or system work in the same way. Some allow easy access to users to modify content – others have restrictions on user access offering different levels of controls. When there are many popular wikis on the web, a common use of wiki system is private by businesses and large corporations. These private wikis are mostly used as a community website, intranet, knowledge management resource or a communication tool.
The popularity of wiki websites is because of their simplified interface and ease of making edits or additions without any need to learn HTML. There are currently tens of thousands public and private wikis online.
